UK Graduate Route is shortening to 18 months: what students should know
The Graduate Route currently lets eligible students stay for 2 years after a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Under the changes that apply to applications from 1 January 2027, the period shortens to 18 months. PhD graduates keep a longer period.
What to check
- The date you apply for the Graduate Route, not the date you started the course, decides the length that applies.
- Your course must be a degree-level course at a licensed sponsor, and your university must report you as successfully completing it.
- Plan for the cost of the Graduate visa application and the health surcharge.
- Check GOV.UK for the current rules before you rely on any particular length.
What it means for your plan
A shorter post-study period makes it more important to choose a course with strong placement links and employers that sponsor visas. Use the return check before you commit.
