| Destination | How you apply | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UK undergraduate | UCAS, up to five choices | From 2026 entry the personal statement is three structured questions within a 4,000-character total |
| UK postgraduate | Direct to each university, a few through UCAS Postgraduate | Rolling admission, early applicants get more scholarship options |
| USA | Common App or the university’s own portal | Essays, recommendations, test scores as required; fees typically US$50–100 per school |
| Canada | University portals; provincial centres such as OUAC (Ontario) for some undergraduate routes | Check each programme’s deadline, which often falls in winter |
| Australia | Direct to the university, or through an agent | Offers often arrive in weeks. The national cap makes early applications valuable |
| Ireland | CAO for many undergraduate degrees; direct for postgraduate | Check ILEP eligibility |
| Dubai and UAE | Direct to the university | The university then files your entry permit and student visa |
| Italy | Pre-enrolment on Universitaly plus the university’s own portal | Deadlines differ by university, most between February and April |
| France | Campus France (Études en France) file plus university portals | Interview at Campus France Pakistan |
| South Korea | Direct to the university, or GKS through NIIED and the embassy | Check the university’s visa-issuing status |
| Cyprus | Direct to the university | The university files your pre-approval with the Migration Department |
| Lithuania | Direct to the university, usually with an application fee | Confirm accreditation before paying |
| New Zealand and Malaysia | Direct to the provider | Malaysia: the university then applies to EMGS for your eVAL |
Fees and deadlines are set by each institution. Confirm on the official page before paying.

- English test result, or a medium-of-instruction letter if the university accepts it
- Statement of purpose or personal statement
- Two academic or professional references on letterhead
- CV or resume
- Research proposal for PhD and some research master’s

- Open with one specific momentA project, a job problem, a question you could not stop thinking about. Avoid a general line about education changing the world.
- Link your past to the courseName two or three modules or research groups and say why they fit your plan.
- Show your plan after graduatingBe concrete about the job, sector or research you will move into.
- Keep it to one page and one voiceUniversities run similarity checks. Have a teacher or counsellor read it, then rewrite in your own words.
For references, pick people who taught or supervised you recently. Give them your CV, the course list and a one-page brief, and ask them at least a month before the deadline.
Apply direct or through an agent?
Applying direct works well when
- You are applying to a handful of universities
- Your documents are straightforward
- You are comfortable with the portal and deadlines
- The university charges no application fee
An agent or counsellor adds value when
- You need a shortlist across several countries
- Your file has gaps, name mismatches or a study gap
- You need scholarship forms and visa files checked
- You are applying for a course with a complex portfolio or interview
Apply for funding at the same time
Many scholarship deadlines close 6 to 12 months before the intake, earlier than course deadlines. Chevening 2027/28 closes on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC, for example. See the scholarship guide for the calendar.
Frequently asked questions
How many universities should I apply to?
Five to eight across at least two countries is a good balance of safe, match and reach options.
Can I apply without an English test score?
Many universities accept a test taken later, or a medium-of-instruction letter from your previous university. Check each university’s policy. For visas, some countries still require an approved test.
How long do universities take to reply?
It varies widely. Some Australian and UK postgraduate courses reply in weeks. UCAS and US deadlines follow fixed cycles. Always check the published response window.
Do I need my degree attested before applying?
Usually not for the application itself. Universities often accept clear scans first, then ask for certified or attested copies at enrolment or visa stage. Start attestation early anyway, because it takes time.
What if I have a study gap?
Explain it plainly and support it with documents such as work letters or course certificates. An unexplained gap raises questions at both admission and visa stage.
