Why study abroad? The honest case for and against

A foreign degree can change your career, but it is also one of the largest financial decisions a family makes. Here is how to decide with real numbers.

The honest case for and against

Why students go

  • Specialist courses and supervisors that do not exist locally, especially at master’s and PhD level
  • One-year master’s degrees in the UK and Ireland that cut cost and time
  • Exposure to labs, industry placements and research networks
  • Work rights during study and, in some countries, a post-study work visa
  • Scholarship routes such as Chevening, Fulbright, CSC and DAAD
  • Independence and a global network

Why students regret it

  • Borrowing more than the first job can repay
  • Choosing a low-ranked provider because the fee was low
  • Work-hour limits that cover only part of living costs
  • Rules that change during your degree, including caps and post-study work length
  • Loneliness and culture shock without a support plan
  • Degrees that Pakistani regulators do not recognise for licensed professions

What the numbers say about Pakistani students

Pakistan is one of the fastest-growing source countries in the world. The figures below come from official and industry datasets. Always check the year, because they move quickly.

A simple way to test the return on investment

Take the full cost, subtract any scholarship, and compare it with the salary uplift you can defend with evidence. A rough worked example in pounds for a one-year UK master’s at mid-range fees shows the method.

ItemAmount (example)Where the figure comes from
Tuition (mid-range)£15,000Mid-point of the £10,000 to £20,000 range in our UK guide
Living costs, 12 months£14,05212 × £1,171 outside London, the visa maintenance rate
Health surcharge£776One year of the Immigration Health Surcharge
Student visa fee£558Fee since 8 April 2026
Total£30,386Multiply by today’s PKR per pound rate from your bank

Illustrative only. Real living costs differ by city and lifestyle.

  • Payback years = total cost ÷ (expected yearly salary uplift after tax). If the answer is longer than about five years, look for a cheaper route or a scholarship.
  • Use evidence. Ask the university for graduate outcome data for your course, and check job adverts for the role you want, including the salary and whether the employer sponsors visas.
  • Stress-test the currency. Your loan and family income are in rupees while costs are in pounds, dollars or dirhams. Test the plan with a 20% weaker rupee using the loan calculator.

When studying abroad may not be the right move

  • You need the degree to practise a regulated profession in Pakistan and the foreign course is not recognised. See course advice.
  • The only way to pay is by borrowing against the family home with no buffer.
  • Your target job can be reached with a local degree plus certifications such as ACCA, ICAP, CFA or a recognised vendor certificate.
  • You are choosing a country only because you heard it is easy. Every country has caps, conditions and refusals.
  • You have not checked that your course is on the official provider register. See the university verification guide.
Another route exists. Since September 2024, HEC’s transnational education policy lets foreign universities ranked in the world’s top 700 offer degrees in Pakistan. Watch for programmes that could give you a foreign degree at lower cost.

Eight-question fit check

  • Can I name the job I want in five years and show how this course leads to it?
  • Do I know the total first-year cost in rupees, and who pays each part?
  • Is my funding plan still safe if the rupee weakens by 20%?
  • Does my course meet the regulator’s rules if I want to practise in Pakistan?
  • Have I compared at least two destinations and five universities?
  • Do I meet the English score, including any per-skill minimum?
  • Have I checked that my provider is on the official register?
  • Do I have a support plan for the first three months?

Frequently asked questions

Is studying abroad worth it for Pakistani students?

It can be, when the course is strong, the provider is verified, and the cost is manageable against realistic salaries. It is a poor decision when a student borrows heavily for a weak course. Use the return-on-investment check on this page.

Which country is best for Pakistani students?

It depends on budget, subject and career plan. The UK attracts the most Pakistani students because of one-year master’s degrees. The US has Fulbright and STEM OPT. Australia and Canada offer work rights with visa caps. China offers CSC scholarships. See the destination comparison.

Can I work while studying to pay my costs?

Work limits differ by country and change. Do not plan to fund your degree through part-time work. Malaysia allows very little work, and other countries cap weekly hours.

Are foreign degrees valid in Pakistan?

Non-regulated degrees are generally accepted for employment, but some professions need council approval, for example medicine, pharmacy, nursing, engineering and law. Check the regulator first.

Is it cheaper to study abroad through a scholarship or a loan?

A scholarship is always cheaper. Start with our scholarship guide. A loan is repaid with interest unless it is a Qarz-e-Hasna scheme.
