Course advice: pick a subject that fits your career and Pakistani rules
Check three things before you apply: entry requirements, job outcomes and whether the degree counts for licensing at home.

Talk to a counsellorEntry requirements: the 14 versus 16-year question
Pakistani bachelor’s degrees come in 2-year (BA, BSc) and 4-year (BS, BSc Hons) forms. Many universities abroad treat a 4-year degree as the equal of a bachelor’s abroad, while a 2-year degree may need a bridging year. Rules differ by university, so read each course page and email admissions if the page is silent.
| Your background | Often accepted for | Possible route if short |
|---|---|---|
| 4-year BS or BE with good CGPA | Master’s in UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, USA | Direct entry |
| 2-year BA or BSc plus 2-year MA or MSc | Master’s at some universities | Ask whether MA counts, or apply to a postgraduate diploma |
| FSc (12 years) | Bachelor’s with foundation or first-year entry in some countries | Foundation year or pathway programme |
| A Levels | Bachelor’s direct entry with required grades | Check subject prerequisites |
Illustrative. Acceptance is decided by each university.
Regulated professions: check Pakistan’s rules before you pay
| Profession | Pakistani regulator | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Doctor | PM&DC (Pakistan Medical and Dental Council) | A foreign medical graduate needs PM&DC recognition and must pass the national licensing examination to register. Confirm the current rules before paying a deposit |
| Dentist | PM&DC | Same recognition and examination process |
| Engineer | Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) | Registration depends on PEC-accepted accreditation. Check before enrolling if you want to practise in Pakistan |
| Nurse | Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC) | Check recognition of the foreign programme |
| Pharmacist | Pharmacy Council of Pakistan (PCP) | Check recognition and any equivalence process |
| Lawyer | Pakistan Bar Council | Foreign law degrees usually need extra steps to practise locally |
| Accountant | ICAP, ACCA and other bodies | Exemptions depend on the course and the body |

Frequently asked questions
Can I do a master’s abroad with a 14-year degree?
Sometimes. Some universities accept a 2-year bachelor’s plus a 2-year master’s, and others ask for a bridging or postgraduate diploma. Always email admissions with your transcripts to ask.
Which subjects are best for jobs?
Demand changes. Technology, healthcare, engineering and finance are strong in many markets, and placements and visa-friendly employers matter more than the label. Use live job data.
Is a one-year UK master’s respected?
Yes, widely. It is a full master’s degree with a heavier workload. Check whether your target employer or profession requires a two-year degree.
Will a foreign degree be recognised in Pakistan?
For most jobs, yes. For regulated professions you need the regulator’s approval, so check first.
Can I switch course after I arrive?
Usually only with approval and sometimes with a new visa. Ask the international office before you change.
