What a guardian does

  • Acts as the school’s contact if parents are overseas
  • Is available at short notice in an emergency
  • Can host the student during exeat, half terms and holidays, if agreed
  • Attends parents’ meetings and helps with medical decisions where authorised
  • Helps with visa renewals, travel and pastoral support

How to choose a guardian

  • Accredited by AEGIS (UK) or the relevant national scheme, where one exists
  • Written agreement stating fees, duties and emergency contacts
  • Background checks and references, as required by local law
  • Local presence and clear emergency procedures
  • Clear complaints route and no conflict of interest with the school
  • Clear refund terms
Watch out: A guardian is not a babysitter or a legal custodian unless the law and documents say so. Keep parental contact and the school’s welfare team involved.
