Why students choose China

  • Low tuition and living costs compared with the UK, Australia, Canada and the USA
  • Large Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) programmes with full funding in many cases
  • Strong engineering, computer science, medicine and business programmes, many taught in English
  • Close to Pakistan, with a large Pakistani student community in many cities
  • Growing links through CPEC-related fields, though career outcomes depend on the course and employer

The Chinese Government Scholarship offers different types of award. Pakistani applicants often apply through HEC-nominated routes or directly to participating universities. The application window usually falls early in the year, so start in the autumn.

MBBS in China and recognition in Pakistan

Many Pakistani students choose Chinese MBBS for cost. Returning to practise in Pakistan requires recognition and licensing by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC), including passing the national examination for foreign graduates. Rules have changed several times in recent years.

  • Is the university listed by the Chinese Ministry of Education as eligible to enrol international students for medicine?
  • Is the programme recognised by PM&DC for registration of foreign graduates? Ask for the regulator’s confirmation in writing, not from the agent.
  • Is the clinical training in an affiliated hospital for the full period, and in which language?
  • Does the course meet the required duration and internship rules that PM&DC sets?
  • What is the plan for the national licensing exam, including pass rates published by the university?
  • Which fees are refundable if your visa is refused or the rules change?
Watch out: Do not pay a deposit for an MBBS programme based only on a WhatsApp message or an agent’s claim of PM&DC approval. Check PM&DC’s current rules and list yourself.

Life in China: practical notes

  • Download Alipay and WeChat early. Most daily payments are mobile.
  • Plan for a VPN only where it is lawful and does not breach local rules. Check what your university advises.
  • Learn basic Mandarin. Hospital and city services often need it, even for English-taught degrees.
  • Halal food is available in many university cities. Ask the university about halal canteens and prayer facilities.
  • Keep your residence permit and passport valid and report address changes to the police.

Frequently asked questions

Is China cheaper than the UK or Australia?

Usually yes, especially with a CSC scholarship. Tuition and living costs are lower than in most Western destinations.

What is the difference between JW201 and JW202?

JW201 is for Chinese Government scholarship students. JW202 is for self-funded students. The university issues the form with the admission notice.

Can I work in China as a student?

Work rights are limited and subject to approval. Do not plan to fund your studies by working.

Will my Chinese MBBS be recognised in Pakistan?

Only if it meets PM&DC’s current rules and you pass the national examination. Confirm with PM&DC before paying.

Do I need HSK?

English-taught degrees usually do not. Some scholarship routes and Chinese-taught programmes require HSK. Check the programme.
