TOEFL iBT scoring changed in January 2026: the new 1–6 scale

English tests, Sep 27, 2026, 4 min read

From 21 January 2026 ETS reports TOEFL iBT scores on a 1 to 6 scale in half-point steps, aligned to CEFR, with four section scores and an overall score. For two years, reports also show a comparable 0 to 120 score.

What this means for you

  • Check whether your university states its requirement on the old 0–120 scale or the new 1–6 scale.
  • Use the ETS conversion table to translate your target.
  • Reading and Listening use an adaptive design, so practise with the official materials.
  • MyBest scores combine your best section scores within two years.

See the English test comparison for how TOEFL stacks up against IELTS and PTE.
